It’s incredible how quickly things can change. Many businesses had a strong start to the year…and then poof. Everything changed overnight. All of the plans, company/team goals, financial objectives seemingly evaporated. Well…maybe they didn’t disappear…but a ‘new normal’ was upon us, and changes were needed. In my conversations with many organizations, a common theme regularly comes up. How do we keep our organizations moving toward their goals?
“We know we have to adapt and change…but how do we keep pace?”
They closed the gym!
A little over a year ago, I made the personal decision to include exercise as part of my regular schedule. It started as three days a week…but quickly moved to 5-6 days each week. My commitment to improving my health had gotten me into a pattern. After a year of the same routine, it wasn’t just a habit…it was an obsession. Work travel, holidays, vacations, it didn’t matter. I found a way to fit exercise into my schedule, no excuses.
Then everything came to a halt. COVID 19 hit, and everything was shut down. The neighborhood gym was now closed, and I quickly found my routine upended. So I had a decision to make. I could let it all go and return to my old routine. Or…I could start running.
It’s a fair statement to say I hate to run. But with my options limited, I made the commitment do just that. However, instead of focusing on how I hated to run…I shifted my attention to the outcomes. Incremental improvement became the goal. What started as 2-3 days per week became 4-5 days per week.
I still hate to run…but I stuck with my commitment. And even as gyms begin to reopen…I’m still out there running.
What next?
It’s effortless to get stuck with indecision. Not making a decision provides an easy way out. No action remains a decision. Unfortunately, it’s the one decision that fails to move you forward. What’s the best way to break indecision…take action.
Recently, a friend and fellow SIBF‘er shared a post on LinkedIn about the need to take action. Setting goals is the natural part. But there is only one way to achieve those goals.
Take Action!
Now, more than ever, we need follow-through. Yes, we still need to keep setting goals. But it’s just as important to take action on them. Organizations regularly face new challenges that require quick response and often shifts in strategy. Communication becomes key to successful action. Both teams and individuals must align their own goals with that of their company. Teams can take advantage of frequent check-ins to ensure both alignment and follow-through.
